Icynene Attic Insulation Nationwide

Icynene Attic Insulation: The Palo Alto Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Icynene-compatible open-cell and closed-cell spray foam insulation for Palo Alto attics, with most complete attic treatments running between $4,200 and $8,900 depending on square footage, existing insulation condition, and whether air sealing is needed first. Same-day installation is available when we scope the job by mid-morning. Most Palo Alto owners discover their Icynene insulation has failed when they notice uneven temperatures between rooms, rising PG&E bills despite mild Peninsula weather, or visible sagging and detachment in the foam layer - problems that often start at the 12-to-15-year mark in our climate, where attic temperatures swing from 40°F winter mornings to 140°F summer afternoons.

Which Icynene Models This Applies To

Icynene produces several product lines, and the one in your attic matters for what we can do next. The LD-C-50 open-cell series, common in California builds from 2008 to 2018, has a nominal density of 0.5 pounds per cubic foot and is typically applied at 3.5 to 5.5 inches for R-13 to R-20 assemblies. The MD-C-200 closed-cell line, denser at 2.0 pounds per cubic foot, was specified more often in the tighter new builds around Old Palo Alto and the Professorville area where higher R-value per inch mattered for space-constrained rafter bays. You can identify your product by the Icynene batch label, usually found on a framing member near the attic access - it’ll show the product code, application date, and the installer’s certification number.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Icynene. For replacements, we match the original chemistry where it makes sense, but we also carry Demilec and Johns Manville equivalents that meet the same thermal and air-barrier specs when the original product is discontinued or when the homeowner wants to compare. One compatibility gotcha in Palo Alto: some 2012-to-2015 installs used Icynene’s H2Foam Lite, which requires a specific ignition barrier coating when left exposed in an accessible attic. If that coating is missing or deteriorated, we can’t simply top-coat; the assembly needs to meet current California Title 24 fire-safety standards, which may change the scope and the price.

Signs Your Icynene Attic Insulation Is Failing

Signs Your Icynene Attic Insulation Is Failing
  • Uneven room temperatures upstairs. Open-cell Icynene can settle or pull away from roof deck joints over time, creating thermal bypasses. In Palo Alto’s Eichler-heavy neighborhoods and the ranch homes off Middlefield Road, we’ve found 15 to 20 percent of the original foam surface area sometimes delaminates while still looking intact from below.
  • Spiking energy bills with no rate change. When the air barrier degrades, your HVAC runs longer to hold setpoint. We compare current PG&E usage against the home’s baseline; a 25 to 40 percent increase in heating or cooling degree-day-normalized consumption usually points to envelope failure, not equipment failure.
  • Visible yellowing, crumbling, or powdery residue on the foam surface. UV exposure through gable vents or access hatches degrades the polymer. In Palo Alto’s sun-exposed attics, especially west-facing pitches in the Foothill or Barron Park areas, we’ve seen surface oxidation advance 2 to 3 millimeters per year when the ignition barrier coating was thin or skipped.
  • Moisture staining on drywall ceilings below. Failed Icynene can lose its vapor permeance balance. Open-cell foam that was appropriate for a vented attic in 2010 may be trapping moisture if the roof ventilation was later modified, or if a bathroom exhaust was disconnected and is now dumping humid air into the cavity.
  • Drafty rooms despite “good” insulation. This is the one that frustrates owners. The foam looks fine, but the air sealing at top plates, electrical penetrations, and chimney chases was never done, or was done poorly. We run a blower-door test - a pressurization reading that shows, in one number, how much air your building envelope is losing - and often find the attic is leaking 2,000 to 4,000 CFM50 more than it should for the home’s size.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Complete Icynene attic insulation replacement in Palo Alto typically falls between $4,200 and $8,900 for a 1,200 to 2,400 square foot home. The low end applies when we’re adding to or spot-repairing existing foam in a vented attic with good access. The high end covers full removal of degraded foam, comprehensive air sealing of top plates and penetrations, and new closed-cell application in a complex roofline with limited clearance.

Every quote we write breaks out three line items: removal and disposal of existing material, air sealing labor and materials, and the new insulation product with application. We don’t bury costs. Under Haven Standard Clause 1, you get that written price before any work starts, a written scope, and a written warranty. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to all completed work. On jobs where a blower-door test is scoped, we provide before-and-after readings so you can verify the air-sealing result in a single figure.

There’s a short list of what a homeowner can safely check: verify the attic access is unobstructed, look for visible foam detachment or staining with a flashlight, and confirm bathroom and kitchen exhausts are ducted to the exterior, not into the attic. Do not disturb the foam surface yourself - degraded Icynene can release isocyanate dust, and without proper respiratory protection and containment, you’re exposing your living space to material that should stay in the envelope. Removal requires negative-air containment, P100 respirators, and disposal following California DTSC guidelines for polyurethane waste.

More critically, spray foam application involves heated, pressurized chemicals that react exothermically. The ratio, temperature, and substrate moisture must be right; off-ratio foam fails structurally and can emit odors for months. Seal the leaks first. The insulation has nowhere to work if the air is moving around it. Call (650) 352-3577 and we’ll scope it properly.
